Convert WhatsApp Opus voice notes to MP3
WhatsApp voice notes and exported chats often include audio that uses the Opus codec. Opus keeps speech clear while using small file sizes, but it is not accepted everywhere. MP3 is easier to play, edit, archive, upload, or send to transcription tools.
OpusMP3 is useful when you want an MP3 copy of a WhatsApp voice note without sending the original audio to a server. The converter runs in your browser, so the selected file stays on your device during conversion.
How to save a WhatsApp voice note
The exact export flow depends on your phone, desktop app, and WhatsApp version. In general, you need to save or share the voice note to a place your computer can access, such as local downloads, cloud drive, email to yourself, or an exported chat folder. The audio may appear as .opus, .ogg, or another Opus-based container.
Steps
- Export or save the WhatsApp voice note to your computer.
- Open the Opus to MP3 converter.
- Select the WhatsApp Opus file and choose an MP3 quality level.
- Use 128 kbps for speech, or 192 kbps if you want a safer default.
- Download the converted MP3 file and rename it for your archive if needed.
Recommended MP3 settings for voice notes
WhatsApp voice notes are usually speech, so 128 kbps is enough for many files. Higher settings create larger MP3 files but rarely make spoken audio meaningfully clearer. If you plan to edit the recording or send it through another tool, 192 kbps is a practical default.
If the MP3 is only for listening, choose the smaller setting and keep your archive lightweight. If the MP3 will be uploaded to a transcription service, shared with a client, or inserted into a video editor, use the balanced setting so downstream tools have a more standard file to work with.
Privacy note
Voice notes can be personal. A browser-local converter is valuable because it avoids the normal upload step used by many online audio tools. OpusMP3 does not include a backend upload flow for your selected audio file in this static version of the site.
Troubleshooting
If a voice note does not decode, try a desktop version of Chrome, Edge, or Firefox. Some mobile browsers limit local audio decoding and large file handling. Also check that the WhatsApp export produced a complete audio file and that the file extension was not changed manually.
If the exported file is inside a chat archive, extract it first and convert the audio file itself rather than the archive. If you have many voice notes, convert one short sample first to confirm your browser handles that WhatsApp export format correctly.
