What bitrate changes
Bitrate controls how much data the new MP3 encode can use. A higher setting may reduce additional MP3 loss and creates a larger file. It cannot recreate information that the Opus source already discarded.
Choose by the job
- Voice note or transcription: start at 128 kbps and listen for clear consonants and background noise.
- General listening: 192 kbps is a practical balance for a compatibility copy.
- Music or complex sound: try 256 kbps when extra headroom is useful.
- Largest MP3 target: choose 320 kbps when file size is secondary, not because it will improve the source.
Verify the export
1. Keep the Opus original
Conversion is usually for compatibility. Keep the source so you can return to it for editing or another export.
2. Compare at the same volume
Open the source and MP3 in the same player and compare speech clarity, music transients, the beginning, and the end. Do not judge by file size alone.
3. Check the destination
Test the downloaded MP3 in the app, editor, or device that needs it. A compatible file that plays correctly is more useful than a larger file that the destination rejects.
Common mistakes
- Expecting 320 kbps to restore missing frequencies.
- Converting the same audio through multiple lossy formats.
- Using the largest setting for every short voice message.
- Deleting the original before checking the downloaded result.
